We are located in the mountains of eastern Kentucky on the banks of the Kentucky River where 4 generations of the McGuire family have called home. This is a picture of life as we know it.

More progress
We made a little more progress on the root cellar today. The water proofing was applied to the outside on all the walls. After a bit of drying time the drainage ditch was cleaned out and the drain pipe put in and covered over with gravel. Then a layer of hay was put on top of the gravel to prevent silt from sifting down through the gravel and plugging the drain line. Now if we get rain it should drain away from the cellar and not be able to seep in. Hopefully we can get it back filled soon.
If we don't get rain tomorrow we will be picking up some more of the hay that was cut and raked. It will be loose stacked to use for bedding in the chicken house and if there is enough we will use some to spread over the grass seed on the hill in back of the house after we get the cellar covered over. So till next time, blessings from the McGuire homestead.

It looks like the cellar has 'wings' that extend past the actual cellar walls. Is this because you want them to act as a retaining wall for the backfill? All in all--lookin good!
Hi Greg, yeh those are wing walls. They are there to keep the back fill from fallin in around the door, so they are really retaining walls.

Looking great Stella!! I can't wait to see it finished and filled.
Hey chris, thanks for visiting. I will be so glad to get this dang thing finished, it has taken all summer. The contractor didnt finish the job so we had to do it.I would love to have all this canned stuff out of the house and stored in there. Next will be the shelf building project. I think I may try to do a post on the whole project with pics from start to finish.
